A PRIORITY FOR SIMN IN HAITI: History has been unfair to Haiti. Although it became the first independent nation in the Americas following a successful rebellion this country has been scarred by tragedies and many events beyond the control of its struggling population. Situated in the Caribbean not far from the coast of the United States Haiti’s needs are many. Safe drinking water, food, decent shelter and health care are all scarce. Children suffer the most from this reality and are at greatest risk... these necessities reveal the lack of development and the need for policies and programs to assist the vulnerable. The Scalabrini Fathers have had a presence in this country since the early nineties. Among their many activities they have built a clinic and a school which serves approximately 450 children in the District of Croix des Bouquets outside of Port au Prince the capital. The immediate goals would be to provide a meal per day for children in school, classroom supplies, text books in French and access to health care. The clinic is in need of medications and consumable medical supplies such as band aids, gauze pads, syringes, needles, soap, betadine, gloves, and alcohol. The picture below represents one of the poor children struggling to survive in a desperate environment. Another picture is a classroom scene with children from the same background which the mission is assisting.
