Amani Wall graduated from Independence High School and the Safe Journey/APP program in June 2010. After graduating from high school, Amani left for North Carolina Central University in Durham to study pharmaceutical science. After her first year of college, Amani was selected for the Science Enrichment Program (SEP) at UNC-Chapel Hill. SEP is an intense 8-week program designed for students interested in health care professions. The application process is highly selective, and out of approximately 600 applicants, Amani was chosen to be one of 50 students accepted into SEP for the summer of 2011. During her time in SEP, Amani gained new skills through seminars, shadowing professionals, and completing four intensive classes that she will need as she pursues career goals. She also had the opportunity to attend special recruitment fairs and meet deans and board members from various colleges and universities. Amani reports that she thoroughly enjoyed the SEP experience. She also remarked that being a member of the R.I.S.E. Leadership Team in the safe Journey/APP program helped to prepare her for the SEP opportunity! Safe Journey and the Adolescent Parenting Program (APP) are case management parenting programs for teen mothers and their children ages birth to five. These programs assist participants with completing their high school education, delaying additional pregnancies, assistance with counseling and educational resources and effective parenting skills. Safe Journey is a program of Communities In Schools (CIS) and is funded by Smart Start of Mecklenburg County. Elevation Church is a collaborative partner with the Safe Journey Program.
